Built on a strategy of low prices and high volume, the company rapidly expanded across the United States during the 1970s and 1980s. Walmart went public in 1972, fueling its growth into a national retail giant. In the following decades, it diversified into supercenters, wholesale clubs, and international markets. Although not all global ventures succeeded, Walmart became the world’s largest retailer. Today, it continues to evolve through e-commerce and technology investments while maintaining its core focus on affordability.
Its stock value has grown consistently since its IPO. A $1,000 investment in Walmart at its 1972 IPO would be worth a little more than $47 million today.
